Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the genre of pamphlet literature as a historical source in the early modern time, particularly in the period of "witch hunt" in England. The purpose of this article is to identify the main difficulties when working with this type of source, classification of pamphlets about possession for the purpose of simplification of historical research of each pamphlet. The article poses a question of the importance of this type of sources on the history of the phenomenon of possession in England in this period. The definition of the genre of pamphlet literature is given. A description of the source is made; structural parts of the text of the pamphlet (title, introduction, main part and conclusion) are identified. Their role in the pamphlet and their brief description are given. The question of the debating nature of the source is raised; the main approaches and methodological techniques to work with it are presented. Classifications of pamphlets on witchcraft by leading experts in this area B. Rosen, M. Gibson and Yu.F. Igina are presented. B. Rosen's classification by the chronological criterion divides pamphlets into those published before and after 1592. M. Gibson divides pamphlets into necessary and trivial, according to the origin documentary and literary. Depending on the type of the author pamphlets are recorded by clerics, pamphleteers, etc. Yu.F. Igina's classification is based on the criterion of historical authenticity: 1) based on real events; 2) with a false content; on the text genre: 1a) documentary; 1b) with an indirect use of sources; 2) literary texts. The problem of irrelevance of these classifications in case with pamphlets about possession is raised. The causes of this discordance are identified. On the basis of the conducted analysis the author suggests a classification of pamphlets about possession. Pamphlets on possession should be divided into 1) pamphlets exclusively about possession; 2) pamphlets on witchcraft and possession. The first category is further subdivided into a) confirming the phenomenon; b) exposing the possessed. Depending on the criterion of historical authenticity pamphlets of the first two categories should be divided into 1a) pamphlets based on written sources and oral retelling; 1b) documentary pamphlets. The second category is divided into pamphlets 2a) created by an indirect use of official sources and 2b) created on the basis of oral testimonies and retelling. Depending on the author, pamphlets about possession can be divided into pamphlets written by direct participants of the events and pamphlets written by an outside author, a pamphleteer. The main difficulties in the analysis of this type of source are determined: 1) reliability of the stated facts, 2) authorship, 3) objectivity. A conclusion is made about the importance of this type of sources due to their hidden meanings reflecting cultural beliefs in the supernatural in the popular consciousness of late medieval England.
