Criteria for the analysis of causality theories of serial crimes (on the example of biological theories)

Akhmedshina N. V., Akhmedshin R. L.

Abstract

The article reveals the algorithm for evaluating the research value of individual causality theories of serial crimes. Within the framework of various research schools, several main directions have been formed, explaining the reasons for the existence of serial crimes. For the most part, these theories are persuasive in both theoretical and empirical aspects, which makes the explanation of their large number problematic. The result of the study was an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of biological theories of causality of serial crimes. In the conducted research, the following general scientific methods were used: analysis, synthesis, system-structural. The following private scientific methods were used in the study: biographical analysis, statistical analysis, comparative-historical method, expert assessment. The factors determining the content of the obtained knowledge about the personality of the offender are singled out: objective patterns that predetermine the nature of the object under study; the level of scientific knowledge necessary for the cognition of the object under study; the social order of the society; academic traditions; the research potential of the scientist. Among the factors by which it is expedient to determine the value of the theory of causality of serial crimes, the following criteria of analysis were assigned: the content of the theory; the typical image of a serial criminal resulting from the content of the theory; theoretical consistency and value; practical value and scope; empirical validity; strengths of the theory; weaknesses of the theory; political and doctrinal bias; the current state and development prospects. These criteria were used in the content analysis of a group of biological theories of causality of serial crimes. This group includes such well-known theories as the genetic theory and the theory of the R-complex. The genetic theory explains the criminal behavior of serial criminals as congenital defects in their body. The theory of the R-complex presupposes the presence in serial criminals of an archetypal complex of aggressive behavior, reflecting one of the stages of human evolution. One of the main ideas is the thesis about the targeting of each theory of causality of serial crimes.
