Self-assessment of health and lifestyle by schoolchildren of Gomel Region

Osipenko E. V.

Abstract

The article presents the results of a sociological research of the students of the institution of general secondary education of Gomel Region on assessing their own health and lifestyle. It is stated that children's way of life has recently undergone significant changes and has a negative impact on their morphological and functional development, and on their perception of the real world. Only 14.0% of the respondents regularly keep a diary on self-control and assessment of their health, study literature on physical culture, sports, health. Only 18.3% of the respondents systematically improve their endurance. Available data from scientific and methodological literature and results of the author's own research testify to a rather low level of physical shape of secondary school students both in the Republic of Belarus and in the Russian Federation, and to their impossibility to perform most of control exercises from the Physical Culture and Health course curriculum. Nevertheless, 50.2% of the respondents consider their level of motor activity to be high, and 46.5% of the respondents moderate. The study showed that 64.8% of the respondents said their health was excellent, and 34.6% satisfactory; yet only 33.2% of the respondents are ready to perform competitive exercise. The analysis of the presence of any discomfort in the 1st-9th grade students of Gomel Region at rest or during exercise showed that, in general, more than 70-75% of the respondents do not experience any signs of discomfort in their own health. 31.2% of the respondents indicate partial satisfaction with the duration and quality of sleep during the days of doing physical exercise, and 10.3% of the respondents a permanent lack of sleep. It should be concluded that the results of the research show the need for correction in the formation of the need-motivation-value sphere of students and their own care for health. The author hopes that the presented material will be useful in the practical activities for teachers, heads of educational institutions, parents, other professionals interested in making decisions concerning the organization of physical education and the design of the developing sports environment in the institutions of general secondary education.
