Pleuropulmonary Blastoma: Literature Review and Proper Clinical Supervision

Petrikova N. I., Efremenkov A. M., Ignatiev E. M., Snitkin N. A.

Abstract

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a very rare, highly aggressive and malignant tumor originating in either lungs or pleura. It is extremely uncommon and is considered to have a very poor prognosis. It is characterized by mesenchymal elements (including undifferentiated cartilaginous and muscle cells or fibroblasts of varying differentiation) and epithelial cells. PPB may be exclusively presented as a cystic component (type I), a solid component (type III) or both solid and cystic ones (type II). It is important to remember that the symptoms of PPB are nonspecific with frequent tense pneumothorax. Clinical observation of a complex PPB (type II) diagnostics in a 3-year-old girl is presented in the article.
